Advantages and disadvantages of different hair extensions

There is a reason Rapunzel is popular with little girls. Every girl dreams of lovely fluffy hair that can be kinked into umpteen twists. While some are blessed to have hair that turns heads, others turn to a hair salon to boost their crowning glory.

Pros and Cons of Hair Extensions

A few tucks here and there, and you have the transformation you seek. However, knowledge of the different hair extensions available on the market and what to look for is essential before you embark on this beautiful hair journey.

Clip In Hair Extensions

These extensions are fixed to the hair with the use of clips sewn onto a thin weft of hair. The number of clips depends on the size of the extension. For example, you use a single clip extension for the temple and multiple clip extensions for the back of the head. These extensions are available for all areas of the head.

Benefits of Clip-Ins

  • Can be used on a daily basis, as they are easy to insert and removed.
  • Since they offer greater flexibility, length and color can be changed as required.
  • The help of a professional is not required, eliminating salon visits.
  • Affordable when compared to other extension methods.
  • No possibility of hair damage, as long as instructions are followed.

Drawbacks of Clip-Ins

  • Mostly made from synthetic hair. Real hair options are more expensive.
  • Secured in place using clips, making it difficult for use on thin hair.
  • Hair extension clips may loosen or fall if not secured carefully.
  • Need to be handled with care to ensure they last long.

Fusion Hair Extensions

Fusion hair extensions have been around for a long time. There have been advancements over the years, making them some of the best in terms of long-term use.  Hot and cold methods of fusion are used to fix them to the hair, using silicone lining as protection.

The hot fusion extension method involves bonding the extensions to the natural hair root using heated keratin bonding material lined with silicone on small sections of hair. In the cold fusion method, copper cylinders lined with silicone are used to slide small sections of hair, before the extensions are secured.

Weave Extensions

A braid is weaved first and extensions are sewn into the braided hair. Weave extensions are fastened together to make a hairpiece and it is then fixed to the braids on the head using a needle and thread.

Benefits of Weave Extensions

  • Very secure and stay in place, as the extensions are sewn into already braided hair.
  • They blend seamlessly into hair that is thick or rough and most types of hair.
  • The absence of heat and glue causes very little to no damage to the original hair.
  • Affordability is the keyword with these extensions.

Tape-In Hair Extensions

They are seamless hair extensions that use single or double-sided polyurethane tape.  Tape-in extensions are a relatively new method, and all that needs to be done is the tape backing taken off and applied to the hair.

Drawbacks of Tape-In Extensions

  • Hair cannot get wet/washed for 48 hours after installation, as the tape needs time to secure in place.
  • Any oil-based products, such as shampoos, can lead to the loosening of the tape and the extension slipping.

Transformative Hair Extensions

Understanding and knowing what each extension offers instead of blindly getting extensions done based on someone’s recommendation; can be the difference between enjoying beautiful, luscious hair as opposed to having regrets. While we just touched the surface of each extension, it is advisable to conduct your own research and visit a reputed hair extensions salon. Get the hair extensions suitable for your hair type and your requirement. hypn
